Forbes: China is Closing the Innovation Gap with America – Bad News for US-China Trade War

Access Partnership’s Public Policy Manager and China practice lead Xiaomeng Lu was quoted in Forbes:

“China’s attention is now turning to the quality and impact of innovation. Chinese Internet giants Alibaba and Tencent have grown to rival their American counterparts – Amazon and Facebook. However, in terms of innovation, China has mixed experience – they have achieved some successes with military-oriented technologies – i.e. Beidou satellites.” The trouble is that China’s innovation policies end up wasting resources, Lu adds. “China’s continued effort to force commercial technology innovation through state planning has resulted in a massive waste of resources and generated little result. China’s push to grow an indigenous semiconductor industry is a salient example of this failed attempt.”
